Youth and Advisory Board Members
The Shoreview Community Foundation is lead by a hands-on Advisory Board.
The all-volunteer board manages the work of the foundation, including organizing community events, raising funds for the endowment, publicizing foundation goal and activities, and approving annual grants to benefit residents of Shoreview. Members are elected for up to a three-year term.

Advisory Board Members
Nora Anderson, Youth Member
Nora is a student at Mounds View High School. She has lived in Shoreview for most of her life and has been involved in her community through her church youth group, various volleyball programs, and most recently, the City of Shoreview’s Human Rights Commission. Nora appreciates Shoreview’s tight-knit community and generosity. She is passionate about service and hopes to utilize some of her talents to make Shoreview a better place.
Bethany resides in Shoreview with her husband and three children. She enjoys serving her community by volunteering at the Slice of Shoreview, assisting in neighborhood rehabilitation projects for people in need and offering time at her kids’ schools in the Mounds View District. Bethany’s undergraduate degree is in social work, and she obtained a master’s degree in public health from the University of Minnesota in 2002. For over 12 years, Bethany has assisted home buyers and sellers as a real estate agent at the Shoreview/North Oaks office of Edina Realty. She and her family enjoy spending time with their golden retriever, visiting family in Duluth and staying active.
Barb has been a resident of Shoreview for over 30 years. She is the proud mother of two Irondale High School graduates. Barb was an active member in Pinewood PTA and various youth athletic associations and booster clubs and is a Reading Buddy. She volunteers with various organizations working to address food insecurity. Barb holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota and focused much of her career on project management.
Jillian is a marketing, sales and community engagement professional with thirty years of experience. She is committed to implement a diversity and inclusion lens in her project leadership. She received a B.A. in Journalism and a M.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Minnesota and is a graduate student at in progress to a Masters in Organizational Leadership and Ethics. She also serves as a board member of Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington County and the Suburban Ramsey Multicultural Forum, and as a youth development champion as a Girl Scout troop leader and Jack & Jill of America youth and family activity chair. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing tennis and riding bikes with her daughter.
Sandy has been the Mayor of Shoreview since 1996. She has served as Co-Chair of the Regional Council of Mayors, is a representative to the Municipal Legislative Commission, co-chairs the Leadership Luncheon Committee for Northeast Youth and Family Services, and is co-founder of the St. Paul Urban Program, a non-profit organization serving disadvantaged youth in St. Paul. Sandy helped to establish the Shoreview Community Foundation in 2008. She enjoys most outdoor activities with a special emphasis on tennis, hiking, golf and skiing. Sandy is the mother of four children and grandmother of seven.
Gaye Melton, Chair
Gaye has been an active residential and business member of Shoreview and surrounding communities since 2012, when she moved with her husband and two children to Shoreview. She has been an active parent volunteer at Turtle Lake Elementary, an ardent supporter of the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries, and a regular Kids Ministry volunteer at her local church. She enjoys exploring the outdoors with her family and trying to keep up with her daughters on the ski slopes.
Carol Brown Mills, Secretary
Carol has lived in Shoreview for 30 years. She and her husband Andrew raised their three children in the Mounds View Schools. She is active in the Peace Community of Faith in Shoreview as well as a part-time educator in the Centennial Schools and St. John's Parish School. Carol also serves on the Board of Directors of the Mounds View Community Theatre and has served recently as their liaison with the Shoreview Library to plan theatre-related programming and bring sensory-friendly performances to theatre audiences.
Ashley has been a Shoreview resident since January 2019. She has spent her career as a fundraising professional and has experience working with community organizations, individual donors, and foundations to raise support for international, national, and local nonprofits. Ashley enjoys being active in the community and participated in the Citizens’ Leadership Academy in spring 2019. She currently serves on the Human Rights Commission.
Curt and Beverly have lived in Shoreview since 1994, and their son Matt attended school at Snail Lake, Chippewa, Mounds View and graduated from the University of Minnesota. Curt is a past member of the Shoreview Planning Commission. Curt has worked in insurance and risk management and as land and claim manager for a pipeline company. Curt is a project manager for ProSource Technologies and handles the land and permitting aspects of cross county pipelines and similar public utility projects. Curt is a regular volunteer for summer camp programs of True Friends.
Alex Rykken, Treasurer
Alex moved to Shoreview with his wife, Allison, in 2017. They live near Snail Lake Park with their two young sons and are members at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Prior to joining the Shoreview Community Foundation, Alex served as a board member with the Minnesota Zoo Associates Board, completed St. Paul’s “Leadership St. Paul” program, and volunteered extensively with the Minnesota Children’s Museum. He began his career as a financial advisor with RBC Wealth Management in 2008 and his favorite hobbies include reading, cooking, and running ultramarathons. You can often find him enjoying Shoreview’s beautiful trails.
Chris has lived in Shoreview with his wife and two children for ten years. He earned an MBA from Carlson School of Management and an MFA in Scene Design from UNC School of the Arts. Chris is the Managing Director of Ashland Productions, a community theater dedicated to young people, and has previously served as Managing Director at Jungle Theater in Minneapolis and a major gift fundraiser at the University of Minnesota and DePaul University. In his free time, he enjoys reading, fitness, hiking and board games with his family.
Max is an executive with Tycon Company, a sponsor of Shoreview Community Foundation’s annual Evening with Friends event. He has lived in Shoreview his entire life, and his children attend school in Shoreview.
Gwen Simonson, Vice Chair
Gwen has been a resident of Shoreview for 30+ years. She is married to Tom, the long-time Shoreview Assistant City Manager. She has two grown daughters both graduates of Mounds View High School and the University of Minnesota. Gwen worked for 30+ years with Liberty Mutual and currently spends her time volunteering at St. Odilia Church, the Slice of Shoreview, and is now serving her second term on the Shoreview Community Foundation. In her spare time, she enjoys dog walking her favorite pets and pickleball.
Mike had a 35-year career in marketing and direct sales at several corporations. He has served on the board of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and as Board Chair and President of Lakeshore Players Theatre, during which time they raised the funds to construct their new performing arts center in White Bear Lake. He serves on the board of Sister Parish, Inc., an international organization which facilitates partnerships between U.S. and Guatemalan and Salvadoran churches.
Aunika Zheng, Youth Member
Aunika recently graduated from Mounds View High School and is and has been active in the community in a variety of ways. She has played violin in many groups and quartets, and has volunteered with several organizations including Bel Rae Senior Living, MVHS Brain Cancer Awareness Club, the MVHS Information Learning Center, the National Honor Society, and Synergy which encourages students to recycle to better the earth.
